Yves Gigon has been the webmaster and Administrative co-Director of the CEC since 1997. The charango represents an appropriation and/or invention of a stringed instrument and in turn the effects of the larger cultural shift that was responsible for the invention of instrument in the first place. The piece begins with a melodic line played by the charango, but as the piece progresses the melody begins to transform until it becomes unrecognizable and is morphed into something foreign. It has since become one of the main instruments for traditional Andean music. The charango instrument was invented in Bolivia only after arrival of Spaniards. Fernando blurs the boundaries of melody, noise and dissonance while exploring concepts of the individual in relation to social, cultural and technological shifts.ĭisplaced alludes to the cultural reciprocation of a people. He has produced sound work for painter Randy Hryhorczuk as well as the Colate team of architects for which it was awarded First Prize at the DigiFest Interactive City Showcase in Toronto.
